Sabyasachi Mukherjee will present at the New York Fashion Week runway on 15 September 2026. Seventeen years after his last appearance, he will unveil his Spring/Summer 2027 ready-to-wear collection alongside the first chapter of his collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Kolkata-born couturier first showed in New York in 2006 with a collection called Snail, built on the slow luxury message of buying less but buying better. Later, he returned in 2009 with a ready-to-wear adaptation of his Mumbai show.
In the years since, Sabyasachi opened a flagship store in New York’s West Village and worked with Estée Lauder, Louboutin, and H&M. He also made frequent appearances at the Met Gala, including dressing Shah Rukh Khan for his debut. Khan wore a custom all-black Sabyasachi ensemble featuring a Tasmanian superfine wool coat with monogrammed Japanese horn buttons.
His other notable appearance at the Met Gala was Natasha Poonawalla in a signature Sabyasachi gold sari and exaggerated train in 2022 for the “Gilded Glamour” theme. Alia Bhatt’s mint-green couture saree with a 23-foot train for the “The Garden of Time” theme was truly one for the history books. 1,965 hours by 163 artisans went into crafting this moment of beauty, hand-embroidered and studded with emeralds, Basra pearls, tourmalines, and sapphires.
Sabyasachi has always played a role in creating contemporary silhouettes and accessories rooted in Indian heritage crafts. That approach is evident in his global collaborations, from Pottery Barn to Starbucks. The same thought extended to the limited-edition lipstick collection in gold-gilded cases with Estée Lauder, which celebrates India’s colour story. The fashion outing with H&M also featured heritage print traditions in their whimsical high street wear. Even Christian Louboutin’s signature red-soled footwear melded well with Sabyasachi embroideries and textiles.
After celebrating 25 years of his eponymous label with an anniversary show in Mumbai headlined by Deepika Padukone, Sabyasachi is back in New York Fashion Week for a new chapter. He has talked about his first NYFW outing as a lesson in timing more than talent. He believes this is the right moment, as the top tier of luxury customers are growing tired of brands that feel ubiquitous. Now that they are looking for discovery, India can bring its version of luxury to a wider audience.
Sabyasachi’s multi-year collaboration with the Met starts with unveiling a High Jewellery Collection at New York Fashion Week. Every piece is handcrafted in India, reimagining the cultural exchange of the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire has absorbed art and craft influences from Persia, Egypt, Rome, and Greece; now we get to see these historic pieces through a contemporary lens.
Stephen Mannello, Head of Retail and Global Licensing at The Met, said this is an opportunity to view “works from antiquity through a new lens.” Sabyasachi remarked that modernisation has cost the world a great deal of craftsmanship; with this partnership, he means to dive into Met’s 5,000 years of history and references, translating them into a modern vocabulary.
From imperial medallions to ancient statuary and religious iconography, Sabyasachi’s artistry will extract ideas from the Met’s finest Byzantine and Late Antique jewellery. One piece is an 18-karat and 22-karat gold wrist cuff with garnet cabochons drawing inspiration from 3rd-century Roman sculpture. A 12th-century Italian or Byzantine bone-ivory carved panel transforms into a necklace with a tiger claw motif studded with cabochons of tourmaline and jade. Some of the pieces can be traced back to Indian roots, such as a gold earring featuring jade and turquoise cabochons influenced by a 17th-century Mughal coin.
Henry Zankov debuts as artistic director of Diane von Fürstenberg on 10 September, opening day of the New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027 season. The 70 shows and presentations schedule ends with Thom Browne on 15th September. This is the first season of NYFW to run under a fully fur-free official schedule policy.
Magda Butrym and Conner Ives also make their debuts this season, alongside returning names like Monse, threeASFOUR and Tommy Hilfiger. The wider lineup includes Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors Collection, Khaite, Proenza Schouler, Tory Burch, and Calvin Klein Collection. 2026 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists Bad Binch TongTong, Jamie Haller, and Milamore will be appearing on the calendar for the first time. They’ll be joining previously named finalists Aisling Camps, Amir Taghi, Lii (Zane Li), and Zoe Gustavia Anna Whalen.
