Nick Axelrod-Welk, co-founder of the West Hollywood aesthetic dermatology practice Contrapposto, launched the brand’s first three fragrances this week: Melting Flowers, Musc Pétille, and Lubanite, each priced at $350.
The extraits de parfum went on sale Wednesday through Contrapposto’s website and its West Hollywood clinic, with a retail debut at Violet Grey stores starting 15 September. The three fragrances took about two and a half years to develop, working with perfumers Frank Voelkl and Shyamala Maisondieu.
Costrapposto’s Melting Flowers, Musc Pétille, and Lubanite
Melting flowers opens with nectarine, pink peppercorn, and Sri Lankan cinnamon, settling into a heart of Brazilian gardenia, Egyptian jasmine, and violet before drying down into Ambrox Super, amyris, Australian sandalwood, musk, and Virginia cedar.
Musc Pétille starts sharper, with bitter orange, ambrette seeds, and pink peppercorn, moves through a peach nectar accord, Georgywood, and magnolia, then settles into sheer musks, cypriol, and sandalwood.
Lubanite is the most unusual of the three: elemi, davana, and pink peppercorn on top; a heart built around a Choya Nakh accord meant to mimic roasted seashells alongside saffron, rose petals, and muguet; and a base of akigalawood, ambergris, and olibanum oil.
Frank Voelkl developed Melting Flowers, while Shyamala Maisondieu created Musc Pétille and Lubanite. Voelkl is a master perfumer at DSM-Firmenich, dividing his time between New York and French Polynesia, where he draws much of his creative inspiration from the surrounding landscape. His past work includes fragrances for Le Labo, Glossier, and Oscar de la Renta.
Maisondieu trained at the Givaudan Perfumery School in Grasse and Argenteuil and has spent her career since as a Givaudan perfumer, working across brands Etat Libre d’Orange, Tom Ford, and Lanvin. She’s built a reputation for an inventive, unconventional approach to blending, with past work for Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera, and Prada among her best-known releases.
Each bottle comes in a fire-polished glass flacon with a brushed-metal cap, housed inside a 416-page die-cut book created with House Advisor and graphic artist Brian Roettinger.
Contrapposto borrows its name from the art history term for a sculptural pose, one where the body’s weight shifts onto a single leg, breaking the rigid symmetry of earlier forms. Axelrod-Welk has described the appeal of that imperfection as central to the brand. He pointed out that fragrances are an extension of skin, echoing the enhancement-based approach the clinic already uses in its treatments.
Tracing Contrapposto’s Journey From Clinic Philosophy to Fragrance
Contrapposto opened as a clinic alone in 2023, run by Axelrod-Welk and his husband and co-founder, Casey Axelrod-Welk, a nurse practitioner who performs the clinic’s injections.
Casey runs the treatment room. Nick runs everything else, including a career that predates Contrapposto by nearly two decades. He worked in beauty editorial at Elle and Into the Gloss, then co-founded the brands Nécessaire and Homecourt before opening Contrapposto’s doors in 2023. Axelrod-Welk designed Contrapposto with three arms from the start: clinic, fragrance, and skin care.
Contrapposto operates out of a historic building in West Hollywood, offering personalised evaluations and biostimulator treatments. Axelrod-Welk has pointed to the rise of quiet luxury and stealth wealth as context for building the brand. He has said real luxury comes from the product and the technique behind it. Contrapposto positions itself against the noise in the mid-range Botox and filler market.
Tommy Boy, Emporio Armani, and Gucci Rush For Men were fragrance staples for Axelrod-Welk since his childhood. That history set a high bar for the debut line. He wanted every scent to be, in his words, “a banger,” the kind that produces a physical reaction on first spray.
Axelrod-Welk has spent the last few years, by his own account, fixated on what actually defines luxury in beauty. Speaking to Marie Claire from his home, he said the brand needed “craftsmanship, story, and quality,” with a specific point of view behind it.
The company spent three years building the clinic and developing the fragrance line before selling a single bottle. Year one of the fragrance business will lean on a small number of retail partners chosen for visibility, with the brand eventually targeting an 80-20 split between direct sales and wholesale.
Skin care comes next. Four products are already formulated, with packaging finished and a launch expected in roughly a year. Axelrod-Welk expects that category to run even more heavily direct, in the range of 80 to 90 per cent of sales.
Violet Grey stores mark the brand’s first wholesale placement of any kind. Everything before September 15 will run exclusively through Contrapposto’s own channels.
