Aesop unveiled the Fragrance Fable collection on 1 September, marking two decades since Marrakech became the brand’s first personal fragrance in 2005. The Melbourne label has taken its existing library of Eaux de Parfum and rewritten each as a fable, with a new scent, Unforeseen Aer, joining the range.
The release was marked with a pop-up exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum, Of Scent and Stanza, running from 4 to 7 September and pairing the new fragrances with poetry and Japanese craftsmanship. Yuko Tanino, a Japanese washi paper artisan, created bespoke works inspired by selected fragrances’ botanical notes and character.
Inside Aesop’s New Fragrance Fable Collection
Every fragrance in the collection is built from two named components. A Radical Ingredient is a single unfiltered botanical extract carried through the top, heart, and base notes. A Fabulist Accord is a blend constructed to suggest a smell that doesn’t occur in nature on its own. With these pairings, Aesop builds a 12-fragrance fable collection.
The twelve scents split into four aroma families:
Fresh: Unforeseen Aer, Seeking Virēre, Tacit Truths, Boundless Erémia, and Eternal Karst
Floral: Rōzu Arises and Entirely Aurner
Woody: Marrakech Intense, Silently, Hwyl, Journey to Ouranon, and Evoking Eidesis
Ambery: Above Us, Steorra
Several older fragrances carry over under new names. Aurner is now Entirely Aurner, its magnolia leaf paired with a Silver Ore Accord. Tacit becomes Tacit Truths with luminous, fresh, citrus, green notes. The underlying scent of basil or first light accord is ever present. Eidesis, now known as Evoking Eidesis, is built around a fable about authenticity. The scent consists of neroli, petitgrain and black pepper, grounded by earthy sandalwood.
Journey to Ouranon, a fable about reinvention, has an accord of myrrh, patchouli and frankincense, with labdanum resinoid. Silently, Hwyl’s fable about serenity combines the accord of cedar, hinoki and thyme with resinous frankincense.
Unforeseen Aer is the only fragrance truly making its debut with the fable collection. Its fable around imperfection holds the scent of geranium, lavandin and rosemary, grounded by nutmeg. Maté, Petitgrain, and Mastic brew up the fable about kindness in Seeking Virēre with the underlying presence of Cypress.
Boundless Erémia Eau de Parfum brings together yuzu, mimosa, and galbanum for a fable rooted in freedom. An addition to floral fragrances, Rōzu Arises tells the story of growth with rose, shiso, and guaiacwood. Rose is an important note in Marrakech Intense too. It evokes the fable of curiosity, blending bergamot and sandalwood under the heady presence of jasmine.
A fable about chance, Above Us, Steorra Eau de Parfum, features frankincense, labdanum, and vanilla bean. Eternal Karst pairs Juniper, Cumin, and Sandalwood around the fable of resilience.
Aesop Debuts a Redesigned Fragrance Bottle
The fragrance relaunch comes with Aesop’s first bottle redesign in two decades. The new glass is taller and slimmer, with a domed base and a cap textured to resemble basalt, referencing the volcanic bluestone beneath Melbourne, where Aesop was founded. The fragrance name appears in metallic text, with an insignia embossed into the glass and debossed into the cap. The atomiser has also been reworked so it comes apart easily for recycling.
Aï Kato, Aesop’s creative director since 2023, oversaw the redesign. Kato has described design at Aesop as the “highest expression of hospitality and care,” and said the goal for the new bottle was for it to “exist harmoniously within the retail spaces alongside the rest of our formulations.” The new design doesn’t depart from the brand’s existing visual language of minimalist silhouette.
Perfumer Céline Barel worked on several of the new compositions, and her connection to Aesop’s fragrance line goes back further than this relaunch. Barel composed Tacit in 2015, the scent that has now been renamed Tacit Truths, and later composed Aurner, now Entirely Aurner. That history makes her one of the more consistent voices behind Aesop’s fragrance identity over the past decade, rather than a name brought in solely for Fragrant Fables.
Fragrance Story Beyond Eau de Parfum
Aesop’s home fragrance line, sold under the Aromatique name, continues to run alongside the personal fragrance range, spanning candles, incense, room sprays, and oil burner blends. The two lines now operate as parallel tracks within Aesop’s wider scent offering.
The relaunch also sits inside a larger corporate context. Aesop has operated under L’Oréal since the group acquired the brand in 2023, and the Fragrant Fables Collection is one of the more significant fragrance initiatives Aesop has run since joining L’Oréal’s portfolio. The brand’s home fragrance line, sold under the Aromatique name across candles, incense and room sprays, continues to run alongside the personal fragrance range, giving Aesop a wider scent offering that extends beyond what Fragrant Fables covers on its own.
