Blog / Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo Returns For Spring/Summer 2027

Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo runs from August 31 to September 5, 2026. Shibuya Hikarie remains the main venue, with shows spread across Shibuya complex and several presentations spilling into brands’ own spaces around the city.

The Japan Fashion Week Organization confirmed 28 collections for the season. Twenty-five of those are official designer shows; four of them are debuts. Three more are partnership shows, grouping brands together by country. Including the partnership presentations, the schedule features nine collections from international labels. One further brand shows through Rakuten’s “by R” project. The season lands just under a year after JFWO marked its 20th anniversary last September.

Sonia Carrasco And Anthony Calydon Make Their Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo Debuts

Two European brands will make their official Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo debuts this season. Spanish designer Sonia Carrasco takes Hikarie Hall A. Carrasco is based in Barcelona and worked as a designer at Alexander McQueen in London and at Celine, under Phoebe Philo, before launching her own label, which she builds around tailoring, hand-finished construction and sustainable materials. She showed a coed collection during Paris men’s fashion week in June, built around exposed seams and dissected lapels, ahead of her Tokyo debut.

French designer Anthony Calydon presents at a venue of his own choosing, away from the main hub. Calydon is self-taught and works from material before silhouette, letting the handle of a fabric decide whether it becomes a hooded top, a trouser or an outer layer. The label has become recognised for its distinctive ribbed hoods with warped silhouettes. He has staged pop-up activations in Tokyo and Osaka before, though this marks his first appearance on the official fashion week schedule.

Both his and Carrasco’s Tokyo slots came out of a partnership between JFWO and the Run x Andam Fashion Awards Paris. Calydon won this year’s Andam Pierre Bergé Prize, worth 100,000 euros, with a year of mentorship from WSN chief executive Frédéric Maus attached.

Asia’s presence on the schedule is growing at the same time. Taiwanese label Charinyeh makes its Tokyo debut. Thailand’s Wisharawish makes its debut on the official Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo schedule.

Japanese Designers Return To The Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo Schedule

Yoshiokubo opens the season, two decades into a run on the Tokyo schedule that shows no sign of slowing. Several Japanese labels return to the schedule after spending varying lengths of time away from the runway. Soduk hasn’t shown since spring/summer 2023. The Megmiura Wardrobe last appeared for autumn/winter 2023. Yukihero Pro-Wrestling has been off the runway since autumn/winter 2019, seven seasons out. Keiko Nishiyama moves from digital presentations to a physical show for the first time since the brand began showing at all.

Five past winners of the Tokyo Fashion Award are also on the calendar: Anna Choi, Kakan, Pillings, RequaL≡ and Yushokobayashi.

JFW Next Brand Award 2027 Leaves Grand Prix Unawarded

Not every prize will be handed out this round. The Grand Prix for the JFW Next Brand Award 2027 will go unfilled. According to JFWO, the judging panel recognised strengths in this year’s finalists on quality, originality and financial footing but concluded that none had yet earned the Grand Prix or the accompanying runway presentation. The organisation has opened a review of the award’s structure and purpose. The Tokyo Fashion Award 2027 and the Fashion Prize of Tokyo 2027 are unaffected by that review, and both winners will be named at the close of the week, as usual.

Meta AI Glasses To Capture Backstage At Rakuten Tokyo Fashion Week

Coverage of the week is getting a technical upgrade this season. Media partner Meta is supplying the organisers with AI glasses, allowing hands-free photography and filming in areas backstage that camera crews don’t normally reach. The footage will be shot from a first-person point of view and shared through the fashion week’s official social channels across the six days.

Tranoï Tokyo, Denim Première Vision And International Buyers Expand Fashion Week

The fashion week doesn’t run in isolation this season. A showroom for the Run x Andam Fashion Awards Paris will open at Shibuya Hikarie, and Taiwanese label C Jean is staging its own presentation and exhibition alongside it. Once the main week wraps, the Tranoï Tokyo trade fair returns for a fifth edition on September 9 and 10 at Yoyogi National Stadium. Running alongside this year’s event is Denim Première Vision Tokyo: Edition 0, the sourcing fair’s first appearance in Tokyo.

Buyers are arriving with their own milestones in tow. Berlin retailer Andreas Murkudis attends as an officially sponsored guest. His store in Tiergarten turns 25 in 2027. Mario de Angelis, who buys for the Verona concept store Macondo, and Hyeongwoo Peter Lim of Seoul’s Beaker complete the international buying programme for the week. JFWO has already pencilled in the following season, autumn/winter 2027, for March 15 to 20, though the organisation lists those dates as still to be confirmed.
