In the watch industry, quartz refers to a timekeeping system that uses a quartz crystal oscillator to regulate the timer rather than a mechanical balance wheel and hairspring.

Quartz movements became the world standard for everyday accuracy because they are highly consistent, affordable to produce at scale, and low-maintenance compared with purely mechanical calibres.

This matters because it demonstrates that quartz, too, can occupy precision-certified territory, not only “mass-market utility.”

From a commercial lens, quartz remains essential because it supports volume segments, fashion watch categories, and many accessible Swiss/Japanese offerings while also enabling a growing niche of premium-accuracy products.

  • On the Swiss industry side, official export reporting shows how the overall sector moves through cycles; for example, FHS reporting for December 2025 described exports returning to positive territory for that month and summarized the full-year 2025 total.

Quartz’s role here is strategic: it anchors the accessible luxury and everyday-wear segments, while premium mechanicals dominate the highest prestige tiers, yet “prestige quartz” is increasingly part of the enthusiast conversation.

If you’re explaining quartz to customers or readers, these are the most useful real-world points:

  • Battery quartz: expect periodic battery replacement and gasket checks (water resistance depends on seals).
  • Solar/light-powered quartz: reduced battery waste; recommend regular light exposure.
  • HAQ/VHP: emphasize “set it once” convenience and annual-accuracy positioning.
  • Accuracy expectations: present accuracy in the correct unit (seconds/month or seconds/year), because that’s how quartz value is marketed and understood.
