John Lewis confirmed on 20 July that it has partnered with RIXO, the British womenswear label built on vintage prints and party-ready dresses, on a 44-piece collection launching 22 October across all 36 John Lewis stores and online. The collection covers dresses, knitwear, blouses, jackets, skirts, scarves, shoes, and bags, with prices starting at £65. John Lewis is calling it the biggest fashion collaboration in its history. Forty-four pieces spread across eight categories, stocked nationwide, is the kind of assortment usually reserved for a full seasonal launch rather than a single designer collaboration.
The 1849 Archive Print Behind the John Lewis x RIXO Collection
The centerpiece of the John Lewis RIXO collaboration is an exclusive floral motif drawn from the John Lewis Partnership Archive. The design was found during the collaborative process and traced back to a block-printed textile from 1849. It marks the first time an archive print has featured in a John Lewis fashion collaboration. The motif appears on five pieces in total: two dresses, a blouse, a skirt, and a scarf. The hero item is a full-length dress called The Vesper, finished in the pattern and positioned as the collection’s signature piece.
None of John Lewis’s rivals have access to a 177-year-old textile archive. RIXO’s own aesthetic, built over more than a decade on maximalist florals and vintage-inspired silhouettes, sits close enough to that period reference for the pairing to work as more than a marketing exercise.
Rachel Morgans on the John Lewis x RIXO Collaboration
Fashion director Rachel Morgans called RIXO “an iconic British brand adored by so many, much like John Lewis,” adding that the pairing “felt natural. ” Full imagery is being held back until closer to launch, with John Lewis telling press that customers can expect to see the complete range later this year.
Why RIXO Partnered With John Lewis
RIXO has spent the past decade building a business on dresses that typically retail between £300 and £500, sold through seven standalone stores, including its newest opening at Bicester Village. This marks the brand’s first collaboration at retailer scale. Co-founder Orlagh McCloskey called it “a true extension of RIXO, taking the heritage of John Lewis, leaning into its incredible archive, and bringing it to life with that RIXO magic.” On what she expects a collaboration to deliver, she was direct: “If you’re going to do a collaboration, you have to do it properly.”
RIXO has worked with other retailers before, weaving Liberty’s own archive prints into past collections and producing vintage-inspired bags with Dragon Diffusion. Neither of those projects put the RIXO name on a nationwide department store rail with a £65 entry price. That reach, across 36 stores rather than seven, is the main draw of this collaboration for RIXO. McCloskey said she wants to see the range worn by women across the UK, whether they are longtime RIXO customers or discovering the label for the first time through John Lewis, styled however each of them chooses.
Why the £65 Price Point Matters for the John Lewis x RIXO Collection
Prices starting at £65 put entry-level pieces in this collection at roughly a fifth of what a typical RIXO dress costs at full price. John Lewis fashion buyers have spent recent seasons trying to prove the retailer can hold its own against mid-market competitors. A recognisable, wholly owned RIXO name at accessible prices supports that goal more directly than another own-label relaunch would. For RIXO, the lower price point opens the brand to shoppers who were never going to spend £300 on a dress without changing anything about its existing stores or its premium positioning there.
How the RIXO Partnership Fits John Lewis's Retail Strategy
The RIXO deal follows John Lewis’s April announcement of a partnership with Skin Cupid, bringing a Korean beauty shop-in-shop to Cambridge, Kingston, and Leeds along with twenty Korean skincare and haircare brands sold online. Both partnerships target categories where John Lewis’s own development has lagged behind specialist competitors. Skin Cupid brought Korean beauty expertise the retailer lacked in-house, and RIXO offers a fashion point of view its own buying team has struggled to replicate at the same pace.
Fashion looks to be the next category in that pattern. RIXO is an independent British label with genuine standing among the shoppers John Lewis wants back, giving the retailer a route to that customer without waiting on an in-house fix. Continuing its commitment to British design talent, the collaboration also strengthens John Lewis’s wider premium fashion offer at a moment when the retailer is under pressure to prove it can compete on more than price.
What Happens Next for John Lewis and RIXO
The 22 October launch date sets a fixed point against which both sides will be measured. Stock movement across 36 stores, comparative sell-through between the £65 pieces and the archive print dress at the top of the range, and whether existing RIXO customers feel the label gained a wider audience without losing its identity will not be visible until after the collection reaches shelves. Shoppers looking to plan ahead of launch day can expect the full collection, in store and online, from 22 October.
