Amazon India and the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council put pen to paper on a Memorandum of Understanding on July 14, 2026, at Bharat Tex 2026 in New Delhi. The agreement is built to widen e-commerce access for the country’s cotton textile manufacturers and exporters, with the US, UK, UAE and Canada named among the target markets. Dr Siddhartha Rajagopal, Executive Director of TEXPROCIL, attended the signing on behalf of the council.
TEXPROCIL's Role in India's Cotton Textile Industry
TEXPROCIL counts around 2,000 member companies across India’s major textile clusters. Its job is to promote cotton textile exports and support the manufacturers behind them, which makes it the natural partner for a deal built around getting more Indian goods in front of overseas shoppers.
How the Amazon India and TEXPROCIL Partnership Will Work
At the centre of the MoU is a joint awareness and seller enablement programme, aimed squarely at cotton textile manufacturers, exporters and TEXPROCIL members. The stated goal is twofold: get exporters properly ready before they try selling abroad, and widen the number of markets they can reach once they do. Bedding, bath linen, kitchen linen and home furnishings already travel well from India, and the country ranks among the world’s largest suppliers of home textiles as a result. Cotton itself carries the nickname ‘White Gold’ in India, and millions of farmers along with thousands of manufacturers depend on it for a living.
How Amazon Global Selling Will Support Exporters
Amazon’s contribution runs on two tracks. The first is straightforward marketplace access. TEXPROCIL members get onto Amazon Global Selling’s platforms across the US, UK, UAE, Canada, Germany and Australia, among other countries, a footprint that dwarfs what most smaller exporters currently use on their own. The second track is educational: nominated TEXPROCIL staff get their own training programme, then carry what they learn back into their networks once the formal sessions wrap. Awareness sessions run both online and in person, and the guidance continues after the workshops end. There are also plans for offline groups where exporters can compare notes with each other, alongside separate resources aimed at anyone newer to cross-border e-commerce.
A third, quieter piece of the MoU has no date attached. TEXPROCIL has agreed to examine whether state or central government policy could speed cotton textile exports along, and Amazon will supply the data behind that assessment. Nobody involved has said when that review happens or what it might lead to.
Why Amazon and TEXPROCIL Are Expanding E-commerce Exports
E-commerce exports from India have been climbing for a decade, and both sides used the signing to put numbers on where that trend is headed. Srinidhi Kalvapudi, Head of Amazon Global Selling in India tied the collaboration to a target of USD 80 billion (roughly £59.7 billion) in cumulative e-commerce exports from India by 2030. “India’s textile industry has long been one of the country’s strongest export sectors,” she added, calling out bedding, bath and home furnishings specifically as categories still gaining ground across Amazon’s international marketplaces.
Dr. Rajagopal made a similar point from the manufacturing side. “India’s cotton textile industry is globally recognised for its quality, craftsmanship and manufacturing capabilities,” he noted, adding that a growing number of Indian home textile and apparel brands are already expanding abroad through e-commerce. In his telling, the shift is not a prospect but something already underway, which is the case the MoU is designed to build on.
Amazon Global Selling's E-commerce Export Growth in India
Amazon Global Selling launched in India in 2015. Since then, the company says it has enabled more than USD 20 billion (around £14.9 billion) in cumulative e-commerce exports from the country. The programme has been used by more than 200,000 exporters spread across upward of 200 Indian cities, and the goods those sellers list reach shoppers in over 200 countries through more than 18 international marketplaces under the Amazon umbrella.
How the Programme Helps First-Time Cotton Textile Exporters
Manufacturing skill alone does not get a product listed on a marketplace abroad. A cotton textile manufacturer in Tirupur or Panipat can already produce goods that would clear any international quality benchmark, but selling them overseas is a different job entirely, closer to freight forwarding and tax law than weaving or dyeing. Customs paperwork for the UAE bears no resemblance to the return policy expectations of a UK buyer, and neither looks anything like the tax registration required for a US listing. This is precisely the gap the enablement sessions are built to close, working through each market’s requirements one at a time rather than treating export readiness as a single checklist.
The timing lines up with wider trends in the sector. India’s textile exports, handicrafts included, rose 2.1 per cent in the 2025 to 2026 financial year, according to the Press Information Bureau, climbing from ₹3.10 lakh crore to ₹3.16 lakh crore (roughly £24 billion to £24.5 billion). The Bureau attributed the growth to steady global demand and competitive performance despite a difficult stretch in world trade.
