RIXO is an independent, founder-led British womenswear and lifestyle brand established in London in 2015 by Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey. Best known for original hand-painted prints, vintage-informed silhouettes and an expressive approach to colour, the label has grown from a small dress business into a wider world encompassing ready-to-wear, bridal, accessories, homeware, physical retail and circular fashion services. Its guiding idea is “future vintage”: clothing designed to remain desirable beyond a single season and to acquire meaning through repeated wear.
A Friendship, a London Flat and a Shared Eye for Vintage
Rix and McCloskey met while studying BA Fashion Management at London College of Fashion. Their partnership developed through university project work and a shared fascination with vintage clothing, the prints, construction and individuality of pieces found in markets and second-hand shops. RIXO’s history dates its beginning to September 2015, when the founders were operating from the living room of their university flat in West London.
That domestic setting became the brand’s first studio, office and stockroom. The early proposition was clear: translate the spirit of vintage into new clothes that felt distinctive but were straightforward to wear. Rather than reproduce historical garments literally, the founders drew from different decades and filtered those references through contemporary proportions, fabrication and styling.
Small independent stockists provided RIXO with its first route to market. A decisive step followed in 2016, when Net-a-Porter began carrying the label. The partnership gave the young company immediate international visibility and helped attract further wholesale interest. At the same time, the founders continued developing their own e-commerce business, preserving a direct relationship with the women buying and wearing the clothes.
The resourcefulness of those first years remains part of RIXO’s identity. The founders have recalled taking samples to New York in a suitcase and approaching potential buyers directly. They also transformed an old 1960s double-decker bus into a travelling presentation space, an imaginative early expression of the brand’s affection for vintage objects, visual storytelling and unconventional retail.
The Language of Print
Print is the most recognisable part of RIXO’s design identity. The brand describes every print as beginning with a painted mark in its London atelier, while McCloskey has remained closely involved in shaping its visual language. Florals, animal patterns, abstract motifs, polka dots and unexpected combinations recur, but the appeal lies as much in the treatment as in the subject. Colours often retain the looseness and personality of brushwork rather than appearing like mechanically perfected digital repeats.
The silhouettes provide a thoughtful counterbalance. Bias-cut midis, fluid blouses, tea dresses, slips, softly tailored separates and occasion gowns allow strong prints to move naturally around the body. References may travel from the glamour of the 1920s to the ease of the 1970s, yet RIXO’s clothes are designed to function in present-day wardrobes.
A dress can be styled for a wedding and later worn with knitwear or boots. A silk blouse can move between an evening engagement and everyday dressing. The most successful pieces look memorable without becoming dependent on a single occasion.
This adaptability is central to the company’s “future vintage” philosophy. RIXO presents longevity not as restraint but as affection: a piece should be enjoyable enough to rewear, versatile enough to restyle, and distinctive enough to keep. The approach also explains the emphasis on recurring silhouettes and evergreen wardrobe pieces alongside new seasonal stories.
An Independent Business with Global Reach
RIXO’s development is notable for the founders’ continued ownership and creative involvement. Rix and McCloskey remained the brand’s sole owners as it entered its tenth-anniversary year, allowing its development to be shaped without surrendering the visual character that first distinguished it.
Over time, the commercial model has become more direct-to-consumer. Wholesale represented more than half of the business before 2020. By 2025, it accounted for approximately a quarter, while RIXO’s online operation and own-store network had become increasingly important. This balance gives the company international distribution while allowing it to present collections through its own styling, editorial voice and retail environments.
RIXO reached £23 million in annual sales in the year ended June 2025, approximately 23 per cent above the previous year. The figure illustrates how a label founded around one highly recognisable category, the printed dress, has broadened commercially without abandoning its original identity. Full accounts for the period ending 29 June 2025 were subsequently filed at Companies House in April 2026.
Official UK records identify RIXO Limited as an active private company, with both founders continuing as directors. Its corporate structure may have matured, but its public-facing character remains personal. The founders continue to appear in brand communications, discuss their discoveries and design references, and frame RIXO as a community as much as a product label.
From Dresses to a Complete RIXO World
Dresses remain RIXO’s centre of gravity, but the label now extends across tops, skirts, co-ordinates, knitwear, tailoring, outerwear, shoes, bags, jewellery and other accessories. Bridal has become a particularly natural extension. Rather than treating wedding clothing as an unrelated visual universe, the brand brings its familiar fluidity, print sensibility and vintage references into bridal gowns, bridesmaid dressing and civil-ceremony pieces.
The move into interiors has been equally consistent with RIXO’s textile-first outlook. Casa RIXO debuted in November 2024 with cushions, tablecloths and napkins. The collection used hand-painted, Henri Matisse-influenced motifs and was made available through RIXO and Liberty London. It allowed the founders’ enthusiasm for pattern, colour and collected interiors to move beyond the wardrobe and into the home.
A collaboration with Ruggable subsequently transferred the label’s florals, animal patterns, tonal geometrics and pattern clashes to washable rugs. In 2025, RIXO also worked with Dragon Diffusion on a limited-edition collection of woven leather bags and belts, demonstrating how its vintage-inflected styling could translate naturally into accessories.
Collaborations have frequently been built around shared craft or cultural affinity. For its Spring/Summer 2026 presentation, RIXO worked with Liberty’s fabric division on exclusive designs. The anniversary programme also included limited-edition T-shirts created with War Child, with profits directed to the charity’s work supporting children affected by conflict.
House of RIXO and Experiential Retail
The opening of House of RIXO at 114–116 King’s Road in Chelsea in April 2023 marked a defining retail moment. The approximately 5,000-square-foot flagship was conceived as more than a conventional shop. Alongside the main collection, it brought together bridal, vintage, petite and pre-loved fashion with hospitality and personal services.
The current flagship offer includes a coffee kiosk, Little Lines Bar, and a dedicated bridal boutique. The combination reflects the sociable atmosphere of RIXO’s beginnings. Shopping is placed within a broader experience of discovery, conversation and styling—the qualities that once drew visitors to the founders’ West London flat.
The flagship also offers alterations for RIXO pieces and selected vintage garments. The service is led by alterations and repairs specialist Liudmyla Kirk, whose understanding of the label’s patterns and fits connects customer experience with the continuing refinement of the product. Bridal gowns and more complex alterations can be supported through comprehensive in-person fittings.
RIXO’s current store directory reflects a selective international footprint. In London, the company lists locations on King’s Road, Marylebone High Street, Carnaby Street, and Westbourne Grove, as well as a presence at Bicester Village and a Liberty London takeover. Beyond Britain, it operates at Kildare Village in Ireland and at 19 Prince Street in New York’s Nolita neighbourhood.
The New York location began as a pop-up in April 2024 and became permanent later that year following a strong response. Reporting at the time connected the opening with a 43 per cent increase in RIXO’s US direct sales, combining store and e-commerce activity. The decision reflected a measured approach to expansion: introduce the brand through a characterful temporary space, observe how the local community responds and establish permanence when sustained demand becomes clear.
Fit, Sizing and Clothes Designed to Be Worn
RIXO currently states that many of its designs are available in UK sizes 6 to 26. The wording is important: the extended range applies to many, rather than necessarily every, style. According to the company, garments are adjusted across the size range so that bust seams, waists, sleeves and hems retain their intended proportions.
A dedicated petite collection is designed for women who are 5 feet 3 inches and under. This recognises that inclusive fit involves more than adding or removing width; length, seam placement and overall proportion also influence how a garment sits and moves.
Fit is therefore treated as part of the design rather than as a final technical adjustment. RIXO’s strongest pieces depend upon how a neckline sits, where a waist is placed and how a skirt moves. Alterations, bridal fittings, and direct feedback from stores reinforce both the garment’s practical wearing experience and its aesthetic intention.
Extending the Life of a RIXO Piece
RIXO’s most clearly documented responsibility initiatives focus on extending garment use and finding value in existing materials. In September 2020, the brand introduced the ten-piece RIXO Recycle capsule, using fabric offcuts and recyclable materials at a woman-owned factory in India. Its deliberately limited production transformed surplus materials into one-off and small-run pieces while retaining recognisable RIXO silhouettes.
Today, longevity is supported through several customer-facing services. RIXO Rental provides access to a curated selection of clothing through a dedicated rental platform. At the King’s Road flagship, customers can bring eligible pre-loved RIXO pieces to exchange for vouchers, including garments originally bought through another retailer.
The brand’s official UK resale platform allows customers to list and sell second-hand RIXO garments. Once an item has sold, the seller receives a prepaid shipping label. Sellers may receive payment or choose up to 110 per cent of the sale value in RIXO store credit. By connecting resale with customers’ original order histories, the service is designed to make recirculating authenticated pieces relatively straightforward.
Alterations and repairs provide another practical way to maintain a garment. Together, these programmes support the central promise of future vintage: creating clothes with emotional and practical value, then providing ways for them to be tailored, rented, exchanged, resold and worn again.
Recognition and Cultural Visibility
Industry recognition arrived early. RIXO received the inaugural DHL Award for Fashion Potential, presented in partnership with the British Fashion Council, in 2017. The award included industry mentoring, logistics support and £20,000 to assist the company’s international development.
In November 2018, Drapers named RIXO Premium Brand of the Year. Five years later, the company achieved a double success at the 2023 Drapers Awards: RIXO was named Womenswear Brand of the Year, while House of RIXO received the award for Best Store Design.
The label’s clothes have also gained visibility through women whose style is followed internationally. Catherine, Princess of Wales and then Duchess of Cambridge wore the pink marble-zebra Izzy shirt dress during engagements in The Bahamas on 26 March 2022. The fluid printed midi captured the balance between polish and ease that has helped make RIXO a recognised name in contemporary occasion dressing.
RIXO’s cultural appeal does not depend on a single individual’s endorsement. Its real advantage is recognisability. A distinctive print, a fluid skirt and a carefully shaped waist can make a garment identifiable before the label is seen. That visual consistency has allowed customers, stylists, editors and public figures to become organic participants in the brand’s continuing story.
Ten Years On
RIXO marked its tenth anniversary in 2025 with a brand refresh and a return to the official London Fashion Week schedule. The anniversary included updated imagery, typography, logos, packaging and a redesigned website, presenting a more mature expression of the company while retaining its vintage soul.
The moment also clarified the principles that have carried the business forward: discovery, hand-painted print, flattering shape, founder-led independence and an emotional relationship with clothing. These qualities have enabled RIXO to evolve without becoming disconnected from its beginnings.
Bridal grows from the company’s understanding of occasionwear. Homeware grows from its command of colour and textile design. Pre-loved, rental and alterations grow from the promise of future vintage. Physical stores grow from the intimate, communal energy of the first West London living room.
That coherence is RIXO’s most valuable achievement. The brand has not simply transformed vintage references into popular dresses; it has built a contemporary British fashion identity in which colour, memory and everyday wearability coexist. In a wardrobe, a RIXO piece is intended to feel discovered rather than merely purchased and, years later, still worth discovering again.
